While other fields such as classical music are now wide open to women, the jazz field remains male-dominated. Why is this? We'll talk with saxophonist Jane Ira Bloom, cellist Akua Dixon and journalist Lara Pellegrinelli about where things stand and if the situation is changing.

In our third annual exploration of jazz and race, we'll talk with a panel of including writer Stanley Crouch, musician Dave Liebman and author Dr. Jeffrey Melnick, who says things are not as simple as they seem.

Since the 1950s, jazz musicians have toured world-wide under the auspices of the United States government. What are the complexities of these situations? How does jazz represent the image that Americans want to project to the rest of the world? We’ll discuss the groundbreaking State Department tours of Louis Armstrong and the larger issues associated with using jazz in cultural diplomacy with pianist/composer Vijay Iyer, clarinetist Joe Muranyi and author Dr. Penny Von Eschen (“Satchmo Blows Up The World”).
